Cooperative Education

Each semester, high school students enrolled in Cooperative Education can apply to Horizon for a 14-week placement in our health care facilities. Students select a career stream aligned with their post-secondary goals and gain exposure to related career options. This experience helps students better understand their interests and strengths – offering insight into what they enjoy (and what they don’t) and supporting more informed, confident career decisions. It also fosters an appreciation for the many professionals who contribute to health care, both on the front lines and behind the scenes.

Students must apply through their high school’s Cooperative Education staff. This opportunity is offered only during the morning to students in both fall and spring semesters. Space is limited, so interested students should speak with their school early to learn more about Horizon’s prerequisites, coordination process, and onboarding requirements.

We look forward to hosting you!

Program Overview

This session introduces students to Horizon Health Network, outlines expectations, and prepares them for a successful experience. Cooperative Education staff from each school are strongly encouraged to attend.

Clinical Placements: Students observe direct and indirect patient care and engage with health care professionals delivering frontline services

Non-Clinical Placements: Students gain insight into operational and support roles that keep health care running smoothly, offering meaningful engagement with professionals behind the scenes.

Skill Development: Students safely practice tasks they wouldn’t otherwise be able to try without formal training.

Patient Recognition: Students are involved in creating small gestures of appreciation to help patients feel acknowledged and valued.

The wrap-up session introduces future opportunities with Horizon, including volunteering, job shadowing, post-secondary placements, and employment.

The session also includes student presentations, where participants reflect on memorable moments, insights gained, and how the opportunity shaped their future career goals.
